Welcome to LINE 17
Ever since I was little, I’ve loved creating things.
Whether it was legos, drawings, or makeshift “potions” from whatever I could find outside, I was always trying to turn something into something else.
Before I knew what branding was, I was filming “cookbook shows” and illustrating the pages myself. My sister would walk around the house with her little camera, capturing bits and pieces of our everyday lives.
This is a still from a home video we filmed in 2008.
What you don’t see here is me getting shy the moment my mom walks over to watch. That part still feels accurate. Sharing art has always been exciting, and to be honest, a little vulnerable. But the desire to create has never gone away. If anything, that passion has only grown stronger.
LINE 17 exists because of that kid with a homemade cookbook and a camera pointed at his drawings. It’s my way of finally putting the work out into the world. Not for praise, but for connection. The best part has always been seeing someone pause, smile, or feel something because of a piece I made.
As for the name, I wanted something simple and to the point. “LINE” speaks to the most basic element of my work: the marks I make from pen to paper. But a line is more than just a mark. It can be straight, curved, continuous, or begin again after it ends. That feels like a fitting metaphor for the creative journey I’m still on, one where I hope to keep learning, evolving my perspective, and pushing my work further.
And 17 has always been a family number. My siblings and I wore it playing sports, and it became something we look for wherever we go. It’s a small reminder of where I started and the ones who have been with me from the very start.
Today, I’m the founder and artist behind LINE 17. Every piece begins the same way, slowly building form through line and contrast.
I work primarily in black and white because it encourages intention. I love color, but there’s something grounding and challenging about removing it. Without it to rely on, every mark matters. The focus shifts to making sure the structure, light, and detail are precise in order to bring each piece to life.
My goal isn’t to create as many finished pieces as possible, but to keep growing through the process. I hope to travel the world, study different artistic methods, and draw from the places and perspectives I encounter along the way. Exploration, both creatively and geographically, feels like a natural extension of this new chapter.
LINE 17 is where I get to share that journey with all of you. This is just the beginning.
I hope you will join me for the ride.
With love,
- Zach Hirata :)
